The Club of Madrid and Democracy Coalition
Project have established a strategic partnership. Cooperation
between the Club of Madrid and the Democracy Coalition Project
covers such activities as preparation for the annual General
Assembly meeting of the Club of Madrid; outreach to key policy-makers;
participation in the Community of Democracies processes; dissemination
of research and policy papers on democracy-related topics;
and development of joint projects.

Club
of Madrid Releases Final Report on The Challenges of Energy
and Democratic Leadership
Members of the Club of Madrid met in Madrid
on 20th-21st October 2006 with renowned scholars, representatives
of international organizations and leaders from industry and
civil society, to formulate practical responses to the challenges
that energy poses to our collective future. The V Annual Conference
was an important watershed for the Club of Madrid as its Members
resolved to use their unique global leadership to focus on
this increasingly.

Club
of Madrid Releases Final Statement of its IV General Assembly,
celebrated in Prague
The Club of Madrid held its IV General Assembly
and Annual Conference from the 10th to the 12th of November
of 2005. The meeting took place in Prague, hosted by the Czech
Foreign Ministry and CoM member Vaclav Havel. It brought together
more than 25 former Heads of State and Government and about
100 renowned scholars, policymakers and expert practitioners,
who discussed and deliberated on the lessons learned from
the transition to democracy processes in Eastern Europe. The
Club of Madrid also welcomed 10 new members and announced
the nomintion or Ricardo Lagos as its new President after
the mandate of Fernando Henrique Cardoso comes to an end in
March 2006.

Club of Madrid Releases Madrid Agenda
On March 11, 2005, the one
year anniversary of the Madrid bombings, the Club of Madrid
released the Madrid Agenda,
an international call to action on democratic responses to
terrorism. The Agenda was issued at the end of a 3 day conference
attended by the world's leading experts on terrorism and democracy
and joined by heads of state and governments and other senior
officials from 60 countries. To learn more about the conference

On April 7, 2005 Fernando Henrique Cardoso,
President of the Club of Madrid and Former President of Brazil
wrote
an op-ed in the International
Herald Tribune on
the importance of the Madrid Agenda in the fight against terrorism.

Club of Madrid Releases Report on IMF and
Democratic Governance
On January 20, 2004 the Club
of Madrid, a strategic partner of the Democracy Coalition
Project, released a new report on the International Monetary
Fund and Democracy. The report includes case studies from
three countries which have recently transitioned to democracy,
South Korea, Brazil and Poland, and examines the role the

Club of Madrid Urges IMF Reforms to Strengthen
Democracies
The Club of Madrid held their Second General
Assembly held November 1–2 in Madrid, Spain and used
the opportunity to analyze the impact of International Monetary
Fund (IMF) policies on democratic governance, with the goal
of generating lessons learned for future interventions.
